The 2026 National High School Finals Rodeo is almost here, and rough stock riders from across the country are getting ready to compete in Lincoln, Nebraska, July 19–25, 2026.

Do not wait until you are behind the chutes to discover a worn glove, cracked spur strap, damaged rope, or missing piece of gear.
Whether you are headed to NHSFR or preparing for another major summer rodeo, use this rough stock gear checklist before you leave home.
Bull riding equipment takes a beating. Heat, sweat, dirt, rosin, and repeated rides can wear gear down faster than many riders realize.
Before competition, inspect your entire setup.
Your bull rope is one of the most important pieces of equipment you own.
Check the handhold, block, loop, tail, and keepers for excessive wear or damage. Look closely at the braid and make sure the rope still feels consistent in your riding hand.
Riders should also confirm they are using the correct right-hand or left-hand setup.

A worn glove can change the feel of your entire ride.
Inspect the palm, fingers, seams, and wrist area. If the leather is worn thin, torn, stretched, or no longer giving you the fit you need, replace it before competition.

Inspect your spur straps around the buckle holes and high-stress areas. Check boot straps for worn leather, damaged hardware, or stretching.

Inspect your protective vest carefully.
Check closures, straps, buckles, and the overall fit. Make sure nothing has loosened or become damaged during practice or previous competition.
Young riders and adult competitors should regularly check vest fit, especially after growth or changes in body size.

If you ride in a helmet, inspect the shell, chin strap, padding, cage, and hardware.
A helmet that has taken a significant impact or shows visible damage should be evaluated before continued use.
