2026 NHSFR Rough Stock Gear Checklist: What Bull Riders & Bronc Riders Need

2026 NHSFR Rough Stock Gear Checklist: What Bull Riders & Bronc Riders Need

2026 NHSFR Rough Stock Gear Checklist: What Bull Riders & Bronc Riders Need

The 2026 National High School Finals Rodeo is almost here, and rough stock riders from across the country are getting ready to compete in Lincoln, Nebraska, July 19–25, 2026.

For bull riders, saddle bronc riders, and bareback riders, now is the time to inspect every piece of equipment in your gear bag.

Do not wait until you are behind the chutes to discover a worn glove, cracked spur strap, damaged rope, or missing piece of gear.

Whether you are headed to NHSFR or preparing for another major summer rodeo, use this rough stock gear checklist before you leave home.

Bull Riding Gear Checklist

Bull riding equipment takes a beating. Heat, sweat, dirt, rosin, and repeated rides can wear gear down faster than many riders realize.

Before competition, inspect your entire setup.

Bull Rope

Your bull rope is one of the most important pieces of equipment you own.

Check the handhold, block, loop, tail, and keepers for excessive wear or damage. Look closely at the braid and make sure the rope still feels consistent in your riding hand.

Riders should also confirm they are using the correct right-hand or left-hand setup.

Shop Bull Ropes.

Bull Riding Glove

A worn glove can change the feel of your entire ride.

Inspect the palm, fingers, seams, and wrist area. If the leather is worn thin, torn, stretched, or no longer giving you the fit you need, replace it before competition.

Always carry a backup glove in your gear bag.

Shop Rough Stock Gloves.

Bull Riding Rosin

Rosin is a small item that can create a big problem when you realize you are out.

Check your supply before leaving for the rodeo and make sure your rosin is stored properly in your gear bag.

Different riders develop their own rosin preferences and routines, but the goal remains the same: creating the grip and rope feel needed in the chute.

Shop Bull Riding Accessories.

Bull Riding Spurs and Rowels

Inspect your spurs before competition.

Check the shank, heel band, rowels, and rowel pins. Make sure the rowels move correctly and look for bent or damaged components.

Your spur setup should be familiar and competition-ready before arriving at the rodeo.

Shop Spurs & Straps.

Spur Straps and Boot Straps

Leather gear can dry, crack, stretch, and weaken over time.

Inspect your spur straps around the buckle holes and high-stress areas. Check boot straps for worn leather, damaged hardware, or stretching.

If a strap looks questionable at home, do not expect it to improve at the rodeo.

Carry backups.

Protective Vest

Inspect your protective vest carefully.

Check closures, straps, buckles, and the overall fit. Make sure nothing has loosened or become damaged during practice or previous competition.

Young riders and adult competitors should regularly check vest fit, especially after growth or changes in body size.

Shop Protective Vests.

Bull Riding Helmet

If you ride in a helmet, inspect the shell, chin strap, padding, cage, and hardware.

A helmet that has taken a significant impact or shows visible damage should be evaluated before continued use.

Fit matters. A helmet should be properly fitted to the individual rider.

Shop Bull Riding Helmets.

Saddle Bronc and Bareback Gear Checklist

Saddle bronc and bareback riders should inspect their equipment before heading to Lincoln or any major summer rodeo.

The 2026 NHSFR schedule includes equipment checks for bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riding contestants, making pre-rodeo equipment inspection especially important.

Bronc Reins

Inspect your bronc rein for wear, stretching, damage, or changes in feel.

Look closely at high-stress areas and make sure your rein is competition-ready before arriving at the rodeo.

Bareback Rigging and Equipment

Bareback riders should inspect their complete equipment setup well before competition.

Check leather, handles, straps, and all high-stress areas for signs of wear or damage.

Do not make major equipment changes at the last minute unless necessary.

Rough Stock Gloves

Your glove should fit correctly and provide the feel you expect.

Check seams, leather wear, and overall condition. Experienced rough stock riders know that a backup glove belongs in the gear bag.

Spurs and Spur Straps

Inspect your spurs, rowels, and straps.

Check leather around buckle holes and make sure all hardware is secure.

Shop Bronc and Bareback Riding Gear.

Do Not Forget the Small Rough Stock Gear

The small items are often the easiest to forget.

Before you leave, check your gear bag for:

  • Rosin

  • Bull rope wire brush

  • Spare spur straps

  • Spare boot straps

  • Backup glove

  • Extra rowels

  • Spur tie-down straps

  • Athletic tape

  • Gear bag

  • Riding boots

  • Chaps

  • Protective equipment

Inspect Your Chaps Before Competition

Chaps are part of a rough stock rider's competition setup and should be inspected before a major rodeo.

Check fringe, leather, belts, buckles, leg straps, and attachment points.

If you wear custom chaps, inspect them early enough to handle repairs before leaving for the rodeo.

Shop Chaps & Chinks.

Pack Backup Rough Stock Gear

One of the smartest things a rider can do is carry backups of the smaller pieces of equipment most likely to wear, break, or disappear.

A spare glove, spur strap, boot strap, rosin, or rowel takes very little room in a gear bag.

Finding those items at the last minute can be much harder.
